EL PASO, TX – Celebrating its 53rd anniversary, the Gilbert & Sullivan Company of El Paso proudly presents, Iolanthe for its summer 2022 season. Iolanthe is an ingeniously witty and magical comedy that presents a topsy-turvy tale of forbidden love between fairies and mortals- peers of the English House of Lords, no less! Strephon is the half-fairy, half-mortal son of the fairy Iolanthe and has fallen in love with Phyllis, a ward of the court. But for them to marry, Phyllis needs the Lord Chancellor's permission, which is going to be tricky as he hopes to marry her himself- as do half of the house of Lords. It's Gilbert and Sullivan at their satirical best poking fun at power, privilege and British parliamentary democracy.– a fairy tale full of fairy fun that only Gilbert & Sullivan could conceive. First performed in 1882, Iolanthe is the seventh of fourteen operatic collaborations by Gilbert and Sullivan. It is universally regarded as one of Sir Arthur Sullivan’s most beautiful scores. Suitable for all ages, this opera is sure to leave you laughing and whistling all the way home.
The Gilbert & Sullivan Company of El Paso was founded by Joan Quarm (dec.) in 1969 with the purpose of education by preserving and presenting the works of W.S. Gilbert & Arthur Sullivan. The company relies on ticket sales for the majority of its operating revenues, and also receives support from the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
